Leyton Orient 1 Scunthorpe United 3

Saturday 18 February 2012

Peter  Moore

Russell Slade’s 100th game in charge of the O’s resulted in defeat, despite Orient taking the lead.

Slade made two changes following the midweek victory at Bournemouth.  Leon McSweeney coming in for Terrell Forbes and new loan signing Solomon Taiwo in for Marc Laird.

Chances were few and far between in a disappointing first half. The first chance of the match fell to Orient, Mc Sweeney crossed from the right and found Jonathan Tehoue who’s header was wildly misdirected.

On 34 minutes Orient took the lead following a fine cross from Dean Cox which fell nicely for Tehoue whose powerful header beat the Iron keeper Sam Slocombe.

Heavy rain in the second half made it very difficult for both teams and in the 61st minute the visitors levelled. Mark Duffy knocked Gary Thompson’s cross back into the area where Josh Walker volleyed home.

The longer the game went on the more likely Scunthorpe looked like snatching all three points. With five minutes remaining former Orient loanee Andy Barcham prodding the ball home from a cross from Thompson.

Scunthorpe made sure of victory in the 89th minute as Lee Butcher, under pressure, dropped the ball and Jon Parkin stabbed the ball into an empty net.

Butcher went down in considerable pain, and immediately there were concerns amongst the players as a stretcher was called for. Butcher suffered a knee injury, which looked at first sight to be quiet serious.

For the final minute, with no goalkeeper named on the bench for the O’s, Scott Cuthbert went in goal, and immediately was called into action turning over a fine effort from Duffy.

A disappointed Russell Slade said afterwards “  The second half we didn’t go out and play, didn’t do the simple things well, didn’t control the ball well, didn’t think we passed the ball well. It was difficult to find positives in the second period.”

Attendance:     4,055

Lee Butcher will miss the remainder of the 2011/12 season after suffering a serious knee injury. Scans on Monday revealed damage to his  anterior cruciate ligament, which will require surgery, and will mean he will be out of action for at least six months.

Leyton Orient look to keep their fine away form, going when they travel to Gigg Lane to face Bury this Saturday 25th February.

Next Tuesday 28th February England U19’s face the Czech Republic in an international Friendly at Brisbane Road. Ticket prices for the game are £3 adults and only £1 for children and concessions.

Former O’s loanee Harry Kane has been named in the England squad. Kane, who scored five times for Orient in 18 games whilst on loan from Tottenham last season, is currently on loan at Millwall.
