Essex slipped closer towards the relegation trap door with a heavy defeat against Somerset at Castle Park in Colchester.

Somerset were bowled out for 215 in their first innings with David Masters taking 5-43. Essex were relived to see Marcus Trescothick caught after just 3 balls. Essex could only muster 151 in their first innings with Billy Godleman top scoring with 53. Trescothick made Essex pay for his earlier failure, taking the game away from Essex with a magnificent 228 n.o as the visitors declared on 367 for 8 setting Essex a massive 432 for victory Essex were eventually bowled out for 212 loosing by 219 runs. To cap a bad game for Essex they were also deducted 2 points for a slow over rate.

With just two more matches to play Essex will be looking to win both games Warwickshire away and Durham at home to try and preserve their first division status.

Essex have also announced that both Mervyn Westfield and John Maunders have been released.

Essex's miserable Colchester festival continued with a 85 run defeat against Derbyshire. Essex made 168 with Grant Flower top scoring with 53 in reply to the visitors 253 for 5.

Better luck on Monday as Essex beat Glocestershire at Bristol by 6 Wickets, Ravi Bora and Grant Flower both hitting 45.

Surrey were up against the Unicorns at the delightful Wormsley ground. Surrey winning by 66 runs, thanks to a century from Steve Davies and Steve Cheetham taking 4 for 32.

Middlesex were in action against Yorkshire at Scarborough, in a game that the home side shaded by just 5 runs. Middlesex chasing 251 for victory fell 6 short despite a fine 77 from Scott Newman. Middesex suffered a second defeat in the space of a couple of days with a 81 run defeat on the D/L method to Derbyshire.
